Explorer TomBeside the Myre car park in Forfar, a little garden gives five local plant hunters their own leafy thank-you. The Forfar Botanists Garden honours members of the Don and Drummond families, whose curiosity carried them far beyond town; if you arrive expecting a giant glasshouse, the modest scale may be the first clever lesson.
Visit Angus calls it a living memorial, completed in 2013 by the Friends of the Forfar Botanists, who still maintain it. Angus Council records plants and stone used to commemorate the five botanists on land held for the community. Their achievements grew from ordinary beginnings and hard-won learning, a story with much more life than a marble plaque alone. The garden invites you to notice plants as things worth studying, collecting stories about and protecting.
Stop here before walking around Forfar Loch. The heritage trail begins at the Myre car park, then leads across towards the country park and its bird hides, seats and loch views. That makes the garden a natural first chapter to a longer outing, though it deserves its own quiet minutes. Read the names, look at what is growing, and imagine the Friends explaining to a sceptical passer-by why a small town can produce people who change what the world knows about plants.
This is an outdoor community garden by the car park, maintained by volunteers, rather than a staffed attraction with published admission hours. Respect the beds and check local signs when you arrive. Let the Forfar botanists send you around the loch with your eyes properly opened; they would probably have insisted you inspect every leaf.
