Font in Town Lands

Font

What is recorded here

Rosscarbery Cathedral still holds a broken circular stone font from Inchidoney church, its base snapped and its water long drained. The move suggests a forgotten time when a smaller house of worship lost its heart and Rosscarbery absorbed it. A child may have been baptized in that font before it became a relic, carrying one community’s prayers into another.
On floor in nave of Rosscarbery Cathedral (CO143-028008-). Circular dressed-stone font (H 0.34m; diam. 0.75m); base broken. According to local information, baptismal font from Inchidoney church (CO135-104004-). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
