Font in Kilcash

In the 19th-century RC church in the village of Kilcash there is 'a rudely carved font' (TS078-072----) (Killanin & Duignan 1967, 145) which according to local tradition was taken from the church at Kilcash (TS078-036001-). The I.T.A. Survey of 1942 records it as an ancient holy water stoup, on which is sculptured a representation of Our Lords Baptism. It consists of a large octagonal limestone basin (int. Wth 0.7m; int. D 0.21m; total D 0.44m) with large central drain hole. An incised horizontal line with rough vertical tooling forms a border around the outer rim. The font itself is dressed with lightly incised horizontal tooling. The base of the font has an octagonal moulding and the font rests on a square base (H 0.43m) with chamfered angles.
