Fitzgerald Monument

Freestanding monument, dated 1970, with square-profile dressed limestone stepped base surmounted by square-profile dressed limestone pedestal with carved inscriptions in Irish and English. Decorative limestone capital to pedestal with shamrock and mask motifs in relief, surmounted by carved limestone Celtic cross with lacing motif in relief.

Monument to Comdt. Michael Fitzgerald, O/C 1st Batt, Cork No. 2 Brigade, Óglaigh Na hÉireann who died on hunger strike in Cork Gaol on the 17 October 1920. It was erected for the fiftieth anniversary of his death. It has shamrock motifs and a ringed cross, typical of nationalist monuments in Ireland and harking back to the Celtic Revival period. It is well carved and designed and occupies a prominent site in Fermoy, on a green in front of the courthouse and closing the vista east from the main street.
