Fintan Gavin is the Bishop of Cork and Ross who grew up in Marino, County Dublin, playing hurling and football with St Vincent's GAA before entering the priesthood. His ordination took place in St Vincent de Paul Church, Marino, on 7 June 1991, anchoring his rise to episcopal rank in the ordinary streets and fields of that coastal town. The place matters because it produced a man who moved from local games and parish work to governing one of Ireland's largest dioceses.
