Field system in Farranafina,newtown North — Report the wrong picture

Farnanafina, newtown North holds a hidden grid of straight lines beneath improved pasture, stretching four hundred metres across several fields. The pattern emerged only through aerial photography in 1986 and remains absent from historic maps, suggesting human hands shaped the land long before modern records. Some lines may be drainage ditches rather than ancient boundaries, yet their geometry still hints at forgotten purpose. The place resists easy description, preserving a shape that maps forgot but the sky still remembers.

In improved pasture on the demesne lands of Newtown House, located 500m to W. Incorporating the area surrounding ring-barrow (LI033-167---), linear earthwork(LI033-097----) and enclosure (LI033-099----) within the townlands of Farranafina, Garryheakin, Rahard and Newtown North. Not depicted on historic OSi maps. Identified by Bruff aerial photographic survey in 1986 (Bruff 85; AP 4/3624) as a field system. Visible as a pattern of rectilinear cropmarks, some perpendicular to each, extending into several fields (400m N-S x 400m E-W) visible on OSi orthophoto taken between 2005-12 and on Google Earth orthoimage dated 20/09/2020. Many of the linear cropmarks appear to be the remains of drainage ditches rather than a pre-1700 field system.
