Field system in Clonkeenkerrill

Field system

What is recorded here

Clonkeenkerrill holds a broken grid of low earth and stone banks beside its church, spanning two hundred metres north to south and one hundred fifty east to west. Quarrying cut through the banks and old cultivation ridges now cover parts of them, proving the land has been taken, shaped and reused repeatedly. The fields no longer align, but they still mark human labour layered beneath later damage.
To NW and N of a church (GA072-014001-). A series of low earth and stone banks covering an area c. 200m N-S by c. 150m E-W are visible, forming no coherent pattern. They have been disturbed by quarrying, and a series of old cultivation ridges overlie some of the banks. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
