Death and life share one ridge in Baile An Lochaigh. Burial ground, clochaun, hidden passage, cross stone and three huts all belong inside the same old field system, while sheep enclosures and a later house crowd around them. The dead did not leave when the living stopped using the fields. They stayed present in the shape of the land, waiting for people clever enough to notice that memory can be built as easily as walls.
A clochaun (KE034-093004-) and Man-made underground passage (KE034-093003-), a cross-inscribed stone (KE034-093002-) and a probable burial ground (KE034-093001-) located within an old field system on the E slopes of a low ridge at the head of Com an Lochaigh, just above the valley floor. Several other structures are located nearby within the same field system, including 3 huts (KE034-094----, KE034-095---- and KE034-146----), some crudely-built structures and enclosures, probably related to sheep farming in the area, and the ruins of a house of probable post-medieval date.
The above description is derived from J. Cuppage (compiler) 'Corca Dhuibhne. Dingle Peninsula archaeological survey.' Ballyferriter. Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne (1986), no. 1038. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
