Field boundary in Tuar Sáilín

Field boundary

What is recorded here

Coimicis and Fermanagh men lost whole towns there. Tuar meaning a fort suggests one of those vanished settlements, though no structure remains visible. The angle and size fit a small defensive enclosure rather than a boundary marker.
Length of relic field boundary found during monitoring of ground works for new forestry. Situated on a south facing slope of the Coomacarrea Ridge, in an area of rough grazing and bog. This feature is centred on ITM 461725 580363 and at a height of c.140m OD. It consists of a c.40m length of stone walling, orientated southwest- northeast with a maximum height of 0.75m and maximum width of 0.8m. Two to three courses of random field stones in height, it is linear in shape but not straight- curving around the northern edge of a boulder strewn slope . There is a possible opening or entrance, 0.85m in width, approximately half way along its length marked by transverse set stones. Compiled by: Tony Miller Date of upload: 3 September 2018
