Fairy fort / stone ringfort in Scrallaghbeg

Fairy fort / stone ringfort

What is recorded here

No gate is visible on either side of the collapsed wall. That absence suggests the fort belonged to someone who never needed human entry, perhaps a threshold where the valley itself breathes rather than a home for ordinary people.
Internal diam. 25.6m A much ruined and overgrown cashel situated on a W facing slope at the entrance to Gleann na nGealt. The enclosing wall is reduced to a band of collapsed debris averaging 1.3m in height internally, .3m in height externally and c. 4m in width. There is no clear evidence for an entrance. The above description is derived from J. Cuppage, ‘Corca Dhuibhne. Dingle Peninsula archaeological survey. Ballyferriter. Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne’ (1986), no. 588. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 7 August 2013
