Fairy fort / stone ringfort in Rusheeny (moycullen By.)

Fairy fort / stone ringfort

What is recorded here

Corkernarusheeny Hill on the Moycullen side of Galway still holds a subcircular cashel, its drystone wall buried beneath a newer field wall. The name suggests fairies, but the shape and setting point to human hands building a defensible home or refuge on a sloping ridge. Another cashel lies close to the south, as if the hill once belonged to more than one household or one claim. The fort has lost little of its presence, even if people have stopped living inside it.
On N slope of Corkernarusheeny Hill. A subcircular cashel (E-W 30.6m; N-S 25.6m) in fair condition, defined by a drystone wall overlain by a modern field wall. A gap at NNE also appears modern. Another cashel lies close by to S (GA054-065----). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. I - West Galway'. Compiled by Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
