Fairy fort / stone ringfort in Quinaltagh

Fairy fort / stone ringfort

What is recorded here

Hernon's Cahir is a ruined stone ring on a Galway hillside, its northern gap still visible though field rubble has swallowed much of the wall. It is the kind of place where people once drew a circle around what they wanted to keep safe, then stepped back and let the field take it.
On S-facing slope of a hill in grassland. Known locally as 'Hernon's Cahir' (Neary 1914, 121, no. 70), this poorly preserved circular cashel (D 37m) is defined by a drystone wall, obscured by field-clearance rubble from N through E to SE. There is an entrance gap (Wth 2m) at N. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
