Mortimer and company built the first fort at Na Grigíneacha, not a fairy, though local stories still call it a fairy fort. The stone ring stands on a high knoll above the Joyce River in Gleann an Mháma, where sight reached far and danger came quickly. Its walls are thin now, hidden beneath a later field boundary, but the shape remains: a small defended place set where people could be seen before they could surprise anyone.
