Fairy fort / stone ringfort in Kilcaskan (bear By.)

Fairy fort / stone ringfort

What is recorded here

Kilcaskan is a circular stone enclosure, eighteen and a half metres across, built on a ridge above Bantry Bay. People called it a fairy fort because the work looked finished yet purposeless, as if the stones had arranged themselves before leaving. Sheep still walk the level interior, unaware that they graze inside a chamber where human intention disappeared but never departed.
In pasture, on the summit of a NE-SW ridge surrounded by hills except to the S where there are views of Bantry Bay. A circular enclosure (diam. 18.5m) defined by a wall which consists of an inner and outer circle of mainly large stones (T 1.25m; H 0.7m), with an infill of smaller stones. Field clearance has added a further collection of stones, both large and small, which are placed intermittently and haphazardly on top of and along both sides of the original wall. The level interior is in pasture. There are gaps in the wall at E and W, but no clear evidence of an original entrance. A stone row (CO103-017----) lies c. 100m to the NW. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 5' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). Date of upload: 22 December 2009
