Fairy fort / stone ringfort in Grange (coolock By., Coolock Ed)

Fairy fort / stone ringfort

What is recorded here

Mud and marble, marble and mud: the ditch filled and collapsed seven times before people stopped coming. That is a fort that kept getting rebuilt, not a fort that died once. The fairies never lived there; the humans did, and they kept returning.
Pre-development testing in 2004 revealed a sub-circular ditch feature (Diam. c. 30m 100m). Sections across the ditch showed up seven fills representing alternate episodes of silting and slumping. The site had rounded ditch terminals and a metalled pathway through the entrance on the N side of the site. There were three to four substantial post-holes inside the ditch at the entrance. Surviving internal features included rubbish pits and linear features. Artifacts include a fragment of lignite bracelet, a copper-alloy stick pin and a socketed iron object. The exact location of this monument is unknown. Compiled by: Geraldine Stout Date of upload: 26 August 2011
