Fairy fort / stone ringfort in Gortnaporia

Fairy fort / stone ringfort

What is recorded here

Mortons and Pritchetts still argue about the fort in Gortnaporia while the collapsed wall and rock outcrop keep their own counsel. The circular cashel measures thirty-eight metres across, with faint inner and outer wall-facing still visible at the east side. It is not a display of human brilliance, but a trapped chamber where identity and memory stop pretending to understand each other.
In scrubland and rock outcrop. Poorly preserved circular cashel (D 38m) defined by a collapsed dry stone wall with traces of inner and outer wall-facing at E. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
