Flattened stones and ghost walls mark a forgotten chamber on Fearn Hill. The chamber is not complete, but it is not empty either. It holds the shape of human thought, waiting for recognition.
Internal diam. c. 13m. A roughly circular area enclosed by a random scatter of stones surviving to a height of .2m. It appears that an outer wall existed, suggested only by a discolouration in the heather. A 2m break in the NE quadrant may indicate an entrance but there is also a causeway through the walls in the NW quadrant. A subcircular foundation of stones, 2m in diameter, inside the enclosure may be the remains of a trigonometrical station while a horseshoe shaped depression in the SE quadrant may be natural. It is situated on the summit of Fearn Hill on a rocky platform and commands extensive views.
The above description was derived from the 'Archaeological Survey of County Donegal. A description of the field antiquities of the County from the Mesolithic Period to the 17th century.' Compiled by: Brian Lacey with Eamon Cody, Claire Cotter, Judy Cuppage, Noel Dunne, Vincent Hurley, Celie O'Rahilly, Paul Walsh and Seán Ó Nualláin (Lifford: Donegal County Council, 1983). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated.
