Fairy fort / stone ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort / stone ringfort in Drumcondra is a fairy fort or stone ringfort in Drumcondra, County Sligo, Ireland. The ruined stone wall encloses a flat circular top measuring 16m north-south and 19m east-west on a small knoll in sharply undulating pasture. A considerable over-spill of stone widens the bank to 3.5m in parts, while the moss-covered interior slopes gently downward toward the east and southeast. A 2.5m entrance opens at the east-southeast, and a linear depression cuts through the south-east wall before expanding into a partially infilled pit.
On top of a small knoll in sharply undulating pasture, broken by rock outcrops. The flat circular top (16m N-S; 19m E-W) of the knoll is enclosed by a ruined stone wall. The wall survives as a sod-covered stone bank without clearly defined edges. There is a considerable over-spill of stone on the knoll slope giving a width in parts of 3.5m. The interior, which is strewn with moss-covered stone, slopes down gently to E and SE. The entrance (Wth 2.5m) is at ESE. A linear depression (Wth 2.6m) cuts through the wall at SE and extends for 7m to NE into the interior, expanding at the NE end to a deep pit (Wth 3.5m; D 0.8m), partially infilled with stone. It appears to be the result of relatively recent disturbance. A ruined field wall skirts the base of the knoll intersecting at W and S with remnants of a rectilinear grid of fields (SL021-113----). A cairn (SL021-114----) lies c. 18m to SE, a cashel (SL021-069----) c. 400m to NW and rath (SL021-079----) c. 400m to SE. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Sligo' compiled by Ursula Egan, Elizabeth Byrne, Mary Sleeman with Sheila Ronan and Connie Murphy (Dublin Stationery Office, 2005). Date of upload: 18 January 2008
