Fairy fort / stone ringfort in Doon

Fairy fort / stone ringfort

What is recorded here

In stony pasture, on top of a hillock. A raised circular area (int. diam. 27.5m N-S; 29.1m E-W) defined by a collapsed stone wall (Wth 2.4m; int. H 0.5m; ext. H 1.2m) along the E and S arcs and by a scarp (H 1.2m) elsewhere. Apart from a section at SE, the wall may have been replaced by a field boundary. The interior rises towards the centre. There is a possible Man-made underground passage (SL044-059002-) in the NW quadrant. This cashel and the possible raths (SL044-085----) are probably those referred to as 'several old forts' in 1836 in the townland of Doon (OSNB vol. 1, 422). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Sligo' compiled by Ursula Egan, Elizabeth Byrne, Mary Sleeman with Sheila Ronan and Connie Murphy (Dublin Stationery Office, 2005). Date of upload: 18 January 2008
