Fairy fort / stone ringfort in Curraheen

Fairy fort / stone ringfort

What is recorded here

Thirty metres across and enclosed by a dry-stone bank nearly two metres high, the Curraheen ringfort stands as a deliberate circular chamber rather than a random heap. The eastern entrance, four metres wide, invites entry past a central mound hidden beneath brambles, while ornamental grasses slope gently through the interior. Dromore Castle owns the demesne where this feature resides, suggesting human hands shaped the woodlands long before modern gardens arrived. The boundary between managed landscape and ancient stone remains beautifully blurred.
In woodland, atop low rise. Circular area (diam. c. 30m) enclosed by dry-stone bank (int. H 1.95m; ext. H 1.75m), best preserved at W. Entrance (Wth 4.10m) at E. Mound of stone (H 1.m) at centre covered with brambles. Interior, planted with ornamental grasses, slopes gently to the E. According to landowner, this is a landscape feature associated with Dromore Castle on whose demesne it lies. Compiled by: Denis Power Date of upload: 26 August 2011
