Fairy fort / stone ringfort in Cuilleen (clare By.)

Fairy fort / stone ringfort

What is recorded here

No human ever lived inside the fairies fort in Cuilleen. That is the truth the stones still tell. People walked past it, threw stones at it or wanted to build there. The fairies refused every time. The hill itself leaned away from their plans. What resists being owned or changed may be alive. Better to leave the fairies their fort than to take it from them.
On a hillock in undulating grassland. Poorly preserved oval cashel (E-W 42m, N-S c. 35m) defined by a low drystone wall. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
