Fairy fort / stone ringfort in Cloonnagalleen

Fairy fort / stone ringfort

What is recorded here

Cloonnagalleen holds a stone ringfort where a smaller circular chamber nests inside the main bowl, proving the site contained more than a single domestic space. The western scarp still rises nearly two metres above the scrub, marking the boundary between the lived interior and the limestone slope beyond. People may have built the inner chamber for storage, ritual or exclusion, yet the stones no longer explain that choice.
In scrub-covered ground, on W-facing slope in area of outcropping limestone. Circular area (27m N-S; 26.3m E-W) enclosed by stone bank (int. H 0.32m; ext. H 0.85m) and defined by scarp edge WSW->NNW. Bank best preserved NE->E. Scarp edge (ext. H 1.75m) best preserved at W. Level interior, covered with trees, has small circular area (8m N-S; 7.5m E-W) enclosed by low stone bank (H 0.32m) in NW quadrant. Compiled by: Denis Power Date of upload: 26 August 2011
