Fairy fort / stone ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort / stone ringfort in Castlesampson is a fairy fort or stone ringfort in Castlesampson, County Roscommon, Ireland. The oval grass and scrub-covered area measures 42.7 metres east-west and 34.6 metres north-south on the crest of an esker ridge. Facing stones appear at the southeast edge, while a relict north-south wall survives inside the perimeter toward the west.
Visible on aerial photographs (GSIAP: M 228-9), and situated on the crest of a NNW-SSE section of an esker ridge. This is an oval grass and scrub-covered area (dims 42.7m E-W; 34.6m N-S) defined by an overgrown spread of stone, with facing-stones visible at SE (original Wth 2m; H 0.5m). A gap at E may be original, but could be associated with modern pens against the inner edge of the perimeter at S. A relict N-S wall survives within the monument towards the perimeter at W, and there are some relict walls outside the enclosure at W. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 24 August 2010
