Fairy fort / stone ringfort in Carrowclogh

Fairy fort / stone ringfort

What is recorded here

Carrowclogh holds a circular stone enclosure on a limestone crag beside a ruined thatched cottage. Westropp saw large foundation blocks in 1916, but thorns and bramble have since swallowed the ring. The fairies may have taken back what people stopped tending.
On elevated limestone crag, immediately to NE of derelict thatched roadside cottage. Monument, depicted on 1923 OS 6-inch map as circular embanked enclosure (diam. c. 20), is now inaccessible due to dense cover of thorn bushes and bramble. Westropp (1916-17, 33) described site as 'greatly defaced ... with a foundation of large blocks, 3 feet to 4 feet long'. Compiled by: Denis Power Date of upload: 26 August 2011
