Fairy fort / stone ringfort in Cahermackirilla

Fairy fort / stone ringfort

What is recorded here

Mackirilla's fort is a hidden ring of stones in a hazel valley, lost to the growth of the woods. It may have been a home, a refuge or a marker for the field, but the hazel has swallowed the shape and the forger has taken the name. What remains is a shadow on the old map and a challenge for the walker, proving that the land still keeps some of its own.
On the floor of Poulacarran valley in hazel woodland. Hachured on the 1842 and 1920 eds. of the OS 6-inch map as a subcircular enclosure (c. 34m NE-SW; c. 26m NW-SE). Due to the dense growth of hazel, this monument could not be located on a field inspection in 1997. A number of the field walls in the vicinity had been cleared as a result of reclamation works.
