Fairy fort / stone ringfort in Cahergrillaun

Fairy fort / stone ringfort

What is recorded here

Caergrillaun is a double-walled stone ring on a Clare hillside, its interior sloping gently toward the southeast while the land drops away to the west and north. The wall stands barely thirty centimetres high now, yet it still marks a small enclosed world beside Eanty Valley, with an underground passage lying just north of the centre. People may have kept livestock, hidden tools or simply claimed a place on the hill when the valley below belonged to everyone and no one.
On a knoll near the top of a W-facing slope in pasture at the E side of Eanty Valley. The land falls away to the W and N. Indicated on the 1842 and 1920 eds. of the OS 6-inch map. Listed as ‘Enclosure’ in the RMP (1996). This subcircular cashel (int. dims. 17.2m E–W; 16.5m N–S) is defined by the remains of a double-faced stone wall (Wth c. 1.5–2.5m; H c. 0.3m). The interior slopes from NW to SE. There is a Man-made underground passage (CL009-058002-) just N of the centre of the interior. A small earthen mound (H 0.2m) is visible to its S.
