Fairy fort / stone ringfort in Blackgarden

Fairy fort / stone ringfort

What is recorded here

No visible stones remain in Blackgarden, yet the lost ring may have stood thirty metres wide among ordinary pasture. Forgetting has reduced its rocky wall to memory, while the field continues unchanged.
In level pastureland. Marked on the OS 6-inch maps as a roughly circular enclosure (diam. c. 30m). Classified by McCaffrey (1952, 218, no. 14) as a very ruinous circular ‘Stone fort’, the wall of which was composed of ‘rocky debris’. No visible surface trace survives. Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 15 February 2019
