Fairy forts are not forts at all. They are old burial mounds, round barrows from before Christianity, before written history in Ireland. People died, others buried them with stones and soil, and generations later the shape was forgotten. What was forgotten became mythology. A mound becomes a palace, a dead person becomes a fairy, memory becomes dream. That is what a fairy fort is: archaeology losing its evidence and reinventing itself as magic.
