Fairy fort / stone ringfort in Ballyallaban — Report the wrong picture

Mammoth local stones tilt inside Ballyallaban, forming a shallow circle that overlookes a rocky hill. The wall still stands in places, though scrub and time have softened its edges. A house may have touched the northern side, suggesting the fort served people before becoming a fairy tale.

Situated c. 22m S of the external enclosing element of Cahermore (CL005-094002-) in a commanding location and overlooked by a rocky hill to the S. The area is overgrown with scrub. A subcircular cashel (int. dims. 30.7m N-S; 31.8m E-W) defined by a wall (Wth 2-2.6m) of mainly large loose limestone blocks and boulders with evidence of external base batter. The wall is best preserved at SSW where the outer wall facing survives to 2.1m and continues (H 0.3-0.6m) to NW. The original wall thickness of 2m is only visible at S where the external wall face survives to only 0.1m externally and 0.4m internally. A low external bank exists from NW to NE. An irregular break at E may represent the original entrance. From E to SSW the wall is reduced to a loose spread but the outer wall face (H 0.5-0.8m) is discernible. Loose stones are scattered in the interior which is highest at the centre. At N a possible house site (CL005-094008-) abuts the enclosing wall. Compiled by: Mary Tunney Date of upload: 15 June 2015
