Fairy fort / ringfort in Tristaun

Fairy fort / ringfort

What is recorded here

Two forts face each other across a hundred and fifty metres of grass, suggesting a small defended community rather than a lonely fairy tale. The eastern gap may have been the entrance, admitting people into a space where quarrying later cut a hollow into the northern ground.
On a hillock in grassland. Poorly preserved subcircular rath (N-S 40m, E-W 34m) defined by a bank and external fosse. The bank survives from N through E to S, and elsewhere a scarp forms the enclosing element. A gap (Wth 2.2m) at E could be original. In NNW sector of interior is a hollow which is probably the result of quarrying. A ringfort (GA087-213----) lies c. 150m to NNW. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
