Fairy fort / ringfort in Ticooly (carr)

Fairy fort / ringfort

What is recorded here

Quarrying scarred the north-west interior and a field wall now straddles the outer bank, yet the southern gap still marks the entrance to a forgotten life. The rath remains a shallow shadow on the grassland rise, its two banks and central ditch waiting for someone to imagine the hands that shaped them.
On a rise in grassland. Poorly preserved subcircular rath (N-S 36m, E-W 32m) defined by two banks and an intervening fosse. A field wall overlies the outer bank. A gap at S appears original. Quarrying has disturbed NW sector of interior. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
