What is recorded here

Mullanarry is not a fortress of fairy kings but a human ringfort: a circular earthwork, likely a farmstead or defended residence, drawn on McCrea’s 1793 map north of Mullinarry Street. The fairy name came later, when ordinary places sounded strange and people stopped asking who lived there.

An earthwork enclosure is depicted on McCrea’s map of Co. Monaghan (1793) at Mullanarry. The location is not certain, but it was N of Mullinarry Street. Date of revised upload: 27 July 2017
