Fairy fort / ringfort in Loughaphonta

Fairy fort / ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort in Loughaphonta: a vanished 20-25m circular enclosure on a slight south-facing rise in County Leitrim, marked on 1835 and 1910 maps but absent from the pasture now. It may have been a home, a boundary marker or a child’s running game before the field swallowed it. The fairness in its name suggests people once placed it outside ordinary reason, and the disappearance leaves behind a clean invitation to imagine what lived there.
Indicated as a circular enclosure (diam. c. 20-25m) on the 1835 and 1910 eds of the OS 6-inch maps, and situated on top of a slight rise on a S-facing slope. No feature is visible at ground level in pasture. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Leitrim' compiled by Michael J. Moore (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2003). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 13 December 2011
