Fairy fort / ringfort in Fohanagh

Fairy fort / ringfort

What is recorded here

Fohanagh holds a thirty-six-metre circular rath on a west-facing slope, where a sharp scarp and shallow fosse still mark the edge of a lost home. The name suggests fairy origin, yet the shape and size fit a human dwelling, likely occupied by neighbours who watched weather roll in from the Atlantic. The fort stands in fair condition beside old field boundaries, waiting for someone to imagine the lights, arguments and ordinary lives that filled its center before memory faded.
On W-facing slope of a low hill. Circular rath (D 36m), in fair condition, defined by a bank and external fosse. A scarp forms the enclosing element from SSW to NW. The fosse is visible from NW to NE and survives as a shallow depression. Several low earthen mounds to NE and E may be the remains of old field boundaries. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
