What is recorded here
Fairy fort / ringfort in Finnure is a fairy fort or ringfort in Finnure, County Sligo, Ireland. The site occupies a low rise in gently undulating pasture but suffered heavy disturbance from quarrying. A raised circular area measuring 23.5 metres across remains enclosed by a substantial earth and stone bank, though quarrying removed parts of the structure and left a scarp instead. An infilled external fosse outlines the outer edge, while a break at the east suggests the original entrance position.
Situated on a low rise in gently undulating pasture. The site is much disturbed by quarrying. Remains comprise a raised circular area (diam. 23.5m) enclosed by a substantial bank of earth and stone (Wth 5.65m; int. H 0.85m). From SSW-NW and from E-SE the bank has been removed by quarrying and the defining element is a scarp (ext. H 0.6m). The outline of an infilled external fosse (Wth c.3m) can be traced at the outer foot of the bank and scarp. A break in the bank at E (Wth 3.5m) with a possible accompanying causeway across the fosse probably marks the position of the original entrance. There are a number of quarry holes in the interior.
