Fairy fort / ringfort in Cloonsheecahill

Fairy fort / ringfort

What is recorded here

Cloonsheecahill holds a subcircular rath thirty metres wide on a rise above marshland, its bank and partial fosse still marking the boundary where human life once pressed against the wet dark. The gap at the south-east may be an original entrance, inviting entry rather than blocking it, while modern hollows inside suggest the ground keeps changing hands. People may have stood there watching water move through reeds, reading danger or promise in the tide of the land.
On a prominent rise in low-lying marshland. Subcircular rath (E-W 34m, N-S 30m), in fair condition, defined by a bank and external fosse. The latter is present from W to NW and from NE through E to SSE. A gap at SSE may be original. A series of hollows in the interior appear modern. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
