What is recorded here
Cloonee held a fifty-metre circular fort and a hidden passage, but grass and time erased their visible shape. The land keeps the memory while human eyes lose the proof.
On a gentle ESE-facing slope in grassland. Marked on 1st ed. of OS 6-inch map as a circular enclosure (D c. 50m). A probable Man-made underground passage (GA042-099001-) was associated but no visible surface trace of either monument survives: possibly a ringfort with a Man-made underground passage.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999).
