Fairy fort / ringfort in Clonmore (clandonagh By.)

Fairy fort / ringfort

What is recorded here

No wall or ditch remains in Clonmore, only a hidden circle thirty-five metres wide beneath ordinary soil. The land has been cleared and worked until human memory vanished, yet the shape resists forgetting. People may have lived there, feared there or played there before the field swallowed the evidence.
Marked on the 1841 edition of the OS 6-inch map; a circular 'fort' (max. diam. c. 35m). Situated in undulating countryside. No visible surface remains. Land clearance in field has taken place. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Laois' (Dublin Stationery Office, 1995) compiled by P. David Sweetman, Olive Alcock and Bernie Moran. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 17 December 2007

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
