Fairy fort / ringfort in Castleroan

Fairy fort / ringfort

What is recorded here

Mortars and men took the hill in the nineteenth century, leaving a scar where the fort stood. The 1840 map still draws its circle, but boots cannot find it because the quarry swallowed the earth. Fairy forts never belong to people, so they vanish when measurement begins. Castleroan keeps its secret by refusing to be known.
Not visible at ground level. Now the site of a quarry. Depicted as a circular enclosure on the 1840 edition of the OS 6-inch map. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Offaly' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 23 May 2011

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
