Fairy fort / ringfort in Cartron (clonmacnowen By.)

Fairy fort / ringfort

What is recorded here

The circular earth bank in Cartron measures forty-five metres across and still holds the memory of an old house, though no stone or timber remains visible. People called it a fairy fort, perhaps because the flat land swallowed the building while the ring endured. It is the kind of place where human life vanished so completely that imagination must fill the gap.
In flat farmland, c. 50m N of Cartron House. A circular enclosure (D c. 45m) defined by a tree-lined earthen bank; known locally as 'a fort'. According to local information, there was 'an old house' within the interior, of which no visible surface trace survives. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
