Fairy fort / ringfort in Carrowrevagh More

Fairy fort / ringfort

What is recorded here

Half-buried in the ridge grass, the fort keeps its shape through patience rather than pride. A band of vegetation still marks the oval, and a second faint line appears when the wind shifts, as if the ground remembers more than it shows. People may have lived inside, or the shape may have grown through repeated use and neglect. Either way, the fort does not demand belief; it waits for attention.
On a ridge summit in grassland. Marked on 3rd ed. of OS 6-inch map (1932) as an oval enclosure. What survives is an oval area (NW-SE c. 55m, NE-SW 37m) defined by a Vegetation band, outside of which traces of a second are visible intermittently. There is a probable Man-made underground passage (GA017-064001-) in the interior. A moated site (GA017-104----) lies c. 250m to NE. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
