Fairy fort / ringfort in Carrigeen (coshma By.)

Fairy fort / ringfort

What is recorded here

Carrigeen holds a forgotten ringfort beside the Dysert Aenghusa monastery, where flat pasture still marks a circular platform and narrow fosse. People may have lived, worshipped or hidden there before the church claimed the land. The field has swallowed much of the shape, but the boundary between human and fairy remains plausible in that quiet Limerick soil.
In flat pasture 450m S of the townland boundary with Ballynahown. The Early Christian monastery of Dysert Aenghusa with its round tower, church and graveyard (LI030-018001/4-) are located 400m to S. The site is not depicted on the 1840 ed. OSi 6-inch map but is depicted on the 1897 ed. OSi 25-inch map as a circular-shaped platform defined by a scarped edge. The site is faintly visible on the OSi orthoimage taken 2005-12 and on the Digital Globe orthoimages taken 2011-2013. The levelled earthwork (ext. dims. c. 34m N-S; 32m E-W) is visible on Google Earth orthoimage taken 28/06/2018 where an external fosse (Wth. c. 4.5m) is visible as a cropmark. The site is not visible on the most recent Google earth orthoimage 14/02/2020. The site is likely to be a ringfort.
