Fairy fort / ringfort in Cappadineen

Fairy fort / ringfort

What is recorded here

Cappadineen holds a fairy fort above ordinary sight. The field itself refuses the plough, as if protecting what the hill already knows. People may have built the ring, but the ring also built people. It taught them to see the boundary between worlds before they could name it.
In pasture, atop hill, commanding extensive view. Townland boundary to W curves as if to respect site. Tradition that this part of field is never ploughed. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
