Fairy fort / ringfort in Ballaghymurry

Fairy fort / ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort / ringfort in Ballaghymurry was an oval enclosure about 50 metres by 40 metres in rolling Galway grassland. It has no visible surface trace now, though it was marked on the first edition of the OS 6-inch map. The forgoes may have been a dwelling, a boundary marker or a place of seasonal gathering. Whatever it was, the land kept its shape long enough for surveyors to draw it before grass and time erased the rest.
In rolling grassland. Marked on 1st ed. of OS 6-inch map as an oval enclosure (c. 50m by c. 40m). No visible surface trace survives. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
