Fairy fort / ringfort in An Tard Donn, droim Chon Cuais

Fairy fort / ringfort

What is recorded here

An Tard Donn, droim Chon Cuais: tradition names a lost fort on Crockmore hill, though no wall or ditch remains for eyes to judge. The summit is marshy heather, the kind of place where human angles dissolve and fantasy walks free. If a fort ever stood there, it gave up its shape to rain, root and time. What survives is the claim itself, a boundary drawn in memory rather than stone.
Local tradition suggests a 'Fort' in this area but no trace now survives. The location is the summit of Crockmore hill on marshy heather-covered land. The above description was derived from the 'Archaeological Survey of County Donegal. A description of the field antiquities of the County from the Mesolithic Period to the 17th century.' Compiled by: Brian Lacey with Eamon Cody, Claire Cotter, Judy Cuppage, Noel Dunne, Vincent Hurley, Celie O'Rahilly, Paul Walsh and Seán Ó Nualláin (Lifford: Donegal County Council, 1983). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated. Date of upload: 22 September 2008
