What is recorded here
Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Tunnagh (tirerrill By.) is a fairy fort or earthen ringfort in Tunnagh (tirerrill By.), County Sligo, Ireland. It occupies rough grazing on the south side of a ridge and preserves a 30m circular area bounded partly by a 3.6m wide earthen bank and partly by a scarp. A 2m wide external ditch appears as a slight depression marked by rushes along the north-west to south-west edge, while a possible 2.4m entrance faces east. Another rath lies 30m to the north-north-west.
In rough grazing, on top of the S side of a ridge. A raised circular area (diam. 30m) defined by remains of an earthen bank (Wth 3.6m; max. int. H 0.5m; ext. H 1.4m) ENE-S and by a scarp elsewhere. An external fosse (Wth c. 2m) is evident NNW-SW as a slight depression marked by a growth of rushes. A possible entrance (Wth 2.4m) is at E. The interior is truncated slightly WSW-NNW by a field boundary. Some rushes grow in the interior, elsewhere the rath is mainly grass-covered. Another rath (SL027-059----) lies c. 30m to NNW.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Sligo' compiled by Ursula Egan, Elizabeth Byrne, Mary Sleeman with Sheila Ronan and Connie Murphy (Dublin Stationery Office, 2005).
