What is recorded here

No visible wall remains in Tullyvaragh Lower, but a hidden ring may still hold the memory of human life. Maps from 1793 and 1834 agreed that a fort stood there, yet the land has taken back its shape. What is forgotten is not the same as lost.

Situated on a broad, low N-S rise in a low-lying landscape between drumlins. It is depicted as an enclosure on McCrea’s map of County Monaghan (1793), and it is also represented as an embanked enclosure (ext. diam. c. 35m) on the 1834 edition of the OS 6-inch map where it is described in gothic lettering as a ‘fort’. No archaeological feature is visible at ground level in pasture. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Monaghan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986).
