Fairy fort in Aghateskin, County Monaghan: a circular embanked enclosure about 45m across, marked as a fort on the 1834 map and still called a fort locally until it was removed in 1984. It sat on a slight ridge at the bottom of a NE-facing slope, its grass-covered circle bounded partly by an overgrown scarp rather than a clear bank. People may have lived there, played there, or simply pointed children toward it as a fairy place; the ground no longer answers which.
Situated on a slight N-S ridge at the bottom of a NE-facing slope. A circular embanked enclosure (ext. diam. c. 45m) described in gothic lettering as a ‘fort’ is depicted on the 1834 edition of the OS 6-inch map and as an arc of hachures E-S-W on the 1907 edition. This was known locally as a fort and was described in 1967 as a circular grass-covered area (diam. c. 38m N-S; 37.3m E-W) defined by an overgrown scarp (at W: Wth 3.2m; H 1.8m) E-S-W that might have been largely natural, but there was no evidence of a bank or fosse W-N-E. It was removed in 1984.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Monaghan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
