Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Tulladuff

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts in Tulladuff are not fantasy, though people once believed they belonged to hidden creatures. The earth itself drew the circle, twenty metres across on a west-facing slope, and human hands may have shaped it into a home or marker before forgetting the name. Fields cut through the south side and levelled much of the ring, but a raised semicircle still projects northward like a forgotten breath. What remains is not a complete fort but a challenge: to imagine the life that turned this ordinary pasture into a place worth remembering.
In pasture, on W-facing slope. Depicted as hachured circular enclosure (diam. c. 20m) on 1842 OS 6-inch map. Levelled; S side of enclosure truncated by E-W field boundary; semicircular, raised area (straight side 20m E-W; projecting 17m to N) defined by scarp (H 0.55m) survives to N of field boundary. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
