Marianne pressed her palm to the soft earth and felt it give like a living thing. The fort had no gate, no wall, no owner, yet it answered her touch. She walked its hidden edge until dusk, mapping the shape that would not show on any chart. When she returned home, her shadow had forgotten how to leave her side.
